Florida’s Gulf Coast Gateway to the Western Caribbean

Port Tampa Bay is the Gulf Coast’s big cruise port — and for most of the western half of Florida, the easiest place to board a ship. Its cruise terminals sit in the Channel District at the edge of downtown Tampa, a short drive from Tampa International Airport and right beside restaurants, the Florida Aquarium and the Tampa Riverwalk.

According to the port, Tampa is home to eight ships from five cruise lines: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and Margaritaville at Sea. Most sail to the Western Caribbean and Mexico — Cozumel, Progreso, Costa Maya, Belize, Roatan and Grand Cayman — with some Key West, Bahamas and longer Southern Caribbean or Panama Canal voyages in the winter season.

This site is a homeport guide for Tampa. We explain which lines sail from here and when, how the three terminals and the parking garage work, the best way to get to the port, what the typical Western Caribbean ports are like, and what to do in Ybor City, the Channel District and the beaches of Tampa Bay before you sail. When you are ready, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will compare every Tampa sailing for your dates and send free quotes.

Why Cruise From Tampa?

  • Drive-to cruising for the Gulf Coast and Central Florida. From Sarasota, St. Petersburg, Lakeland or Orlando, Tampa is often the closest homeport.
  • Western Caribbean and Mexico are close. The Yucatan Peninsula is a short sail across the Gulf, so 4- to 7-night itineraries reach Mexico, Central America and the Cayman Islands.
  • A city-center port. The terminals are in the Channel District, walking distance from restaurants and attractions.
  • Choice of styles. Fun-focused Carnival, laid-back Margaritaville at Sea, premium Celebrity and more in the winter season.
  • Easy air access. Tampa International Airport is about 15 minutes from the Channel District, per the port.

One Thing Unique to Tampa: The Skyway

Every ship leaving Tampa passes under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge at the mouth of Tampa Bay — a memorable sight from the top deck. The bridge’s clearance also limits how tall a ship can be to reach the port. That is why Tampa is home to mid-size ships rather than the very largest mega-ships you will find in Miami, Port Everglades or Port Canaveral.

For many cruisers that is a plus: mid-size ships mean shorter lines, easier navigation onboard and a more relaxed feel. If you have your heart set on one of the newest giant ships, our advisors will show you how a Tampa sailing compares with the east-coast ports.
